Underground Rainwater Collection Systems

Underground rainwater collection systems are frequently used to store rainwater during the rainy seasons for use during the dry seasons. There are a number of things that you should take into consideration when designing and installing an underground rainwater storage tank. First of all, you should make sure that your storage tank does not have any leakages. The tanks should be durable and watertight to prevent leakages. If underground storage tanks are not properly plastered and installed, they can collapse.

Secondly, an underground storage tank must have a tight fitting cover to prevent evaporation and mosquito breeding. A tight fitting cover is also needed to prevent insects, birds, rodents or other small animals from entering the tank and contaminating the rainwater.

Using an underground rainwater storage tank provides a number of advantages. Storing rainwater in storage tanks reduces erosion and flooding. Home and industrial users are provided with a backup water supply that comes in handy when there is a failure or interruption with the public water systems.

There are however a few disadvantages of using underground storage tanks. You should be aware of these so that you can decide if using an underground storage tank is the best option for you. If there is a leak in the tank, it may be difficult to detect. When detected, it may be difficult to take corrective measures. Since that an underground storage tank is in the ground, gravity will no longer has any influence on the water which means that power lifting devices will be needed to remove the water from the tank.

In order to maintain the quality of your rainwater and to extend the life of the rainwater collection system, you will need to preform ongoing maintenance on your system. You need to check the strange tanks frequently to makes are that they are no damages that will allow insects, rodents or small animals from entering the tank. You also should make sure that the gutters and pipes are clean and free of debris and leaves. It is recommended to have your tank checked once a year for sludge on that bottom of the tank.
